U.S. Officials Meet With North Koreans to Discuss Summit

At a higher level, meanwhile, the North Korean leader's right-hand man Kim Yong-chol flew to NY to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Details of those talks hadn't emerged yet.

This week's talks are aimed at determining whether North Korea is prepared to make sufficient commitments toward getting rid of its nuclear weapons, a US official said, despite Pyongyang's insistence it will not unilaterally denuclearize.

Kim may see a meeting with Trump as necessary to easing pressure from crushing sanctions and to winning security assurances in a region surrounded by enemies.

While there have been a few instances in which countries were persuaded to abandon their nuclear ambitions in exchange for sanctions relief and compensation, none of the cases are directly applicable to North Korea, which has advanced its nukes further and with greater zeal than any of the others.

U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton has also been having calls with his South Korean and Japanese counterparts "virtually every day" over the past couple of weeks, including a call with South Korea's National Security Office Director Chung Eui-yong earlier in the day, Sanders said. But he repeatedly refused to answer questions on the specifics of how North Korea would relinquish its nuclear weapons or if they would allow worldwide experts to inspect nuclear facilities.

They met with Choe Son Hui, the North Korean vice foreign minister who issued an angry statement last week attacking U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and saying it was up to the United States whether the two sides met in a meeting room or in "a nuclear-to-nuclear showdown".
