A subtropical storm has characteristics of both a tropical and non-tropical storm.

With the threat for Alberto growing as the storm continues to develop, the National Hurricane Center has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for the Gulf Coast from Grand Isle eastward to Indian Pass, Florida.

Hurricane season officially begins next Friday.

It's now a 40-mph storm located about 60 miles south of Cozumel, Mexico, according to the hurricane center's 2 p.m. Friday update.

There are now no severe weather alerts for Northeast Florida, but rip current warnings were issued Friday along Florida's Gulf Coast area expected to be extended to the East Coast over the weekend.

Periods of heavy rain is expected as Sunday progresses into Monday and Tuesday. Gerry Bell, the lead hurricane forecaster at NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, said in an interview. Alberto is sitting east of the Yucatan Peninsula with sustained winds of 40 miles per hour and is expected to move north into the Gulf of Mexico, where conditions are favorable for further development.

Hedman silences crowd in 'huge' Lightning win over Capitals
Both teams entered the game red-hot on the power play, and the Lightning's unsafe extra-man unit continued its terrorizing ways. Those last-second power play goals, including a buzzer-beater, aren't exactly routine, especially in back-to-back games.

"It doesn't have a real warm core, it's not taking energy from the warm waters, but it does mean that this system is producing winds of tropical storm force, but it's very near the centre". Rainfall could reach up to 6 inches in parts of Florida up to the Carolinas.

If you're traveling for the holiday, the worst weather will be in South Florida-where they will deal with even more rain-and the Florida Panhandle-where winds and storm surge will be a concern. Note the heavy rain that will fall along and to the east of the tropical storm.

It's still unknown how big Alberto could get - some forecasting models show it hovering around as a tropical depression with heavy rains, while others show its wind speeds growing all the way to hurricane force.

Flash Flood Watches will start tomorrow, for most locations south of Highway 84.

The system will also create hazardous conditions along the coast.

Away from beaches, tomorrow's weather may be a bit wetter but not unusually different.
