5-Year-Old Attacked By Bear Near Grand Junction

A large black bear attacked a 5-year-old girl in her backyard in Colorado early Sunday, game officials said.

The child was grabbed in or near her own home in Grand Junction around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Department said.

The mother says she scared the bear away by screaming at it.

According to the mother, the five-year-old had gone outside after hearing noises in the yard which she thought may have been her dog. If they find it, the animal will be put down.

"Fortunately she had no life-threatening injuries", Breaux said. Experts say that once a bear discovers a way to get food on a person's property, they will remember and keep coming back.
