Studio Ghibli Icon, Isao Takahata, Dies at 82

Throughout his career Takahata worked on more than 20 films, earning him worldwide acclaim, including "Only Yesterday" and "My Neighbors the Yamadas".

Famed Japanese animator and film director, Isao Takahata, has passed away at the age of 82!

After decades as creative rivals, the pair joined forces to found Studio Ghibli in 1985, which went on to become one of the most acclaimed animation houses in the world.

And the late Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Roger Ebert once called the movie "an emotional experience so powerful that it forces a rethinking of animation".

Studio Ghibli is responsible for some of the most handsome and popular animated features ever made.

However, this has not stopped the films being lucrative box-office smashes.

Takahata died of lung cancer on Thursday, the studio said. He also produces some of the studio's films including Miyazaki's 1984 "Nausicca of the Valley of the wind", which told the horror of environmental disaster through a story about a princess.

Takahata enjoyed greater success with "Pom Poko", a 1994 fantasy-adventure that was chosen as Japan's entry for Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.

Takahata also dabbled in politics, co-signing with around 250 other film celebrities, a petition against a controversial state secrets law in 2013.

The studio will hold a "farewell ceremony" on May 15.

"France is the country I have travelled in most and I am extremely happy to have been decorated by the nation to which I feel closest", he said in his acceptance speech.
